CYBERJAYA, 14 May - Multimedia University (MMU) was ranked No. 171 out of the top 200 Asian Universities by the QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd, the compilers of Times Higher Education.

This year, 6 Malaysian universities made it into the regional list, with MMU being the only Malaysian private university in the top 200 in the ranking. The other 5 universities were Malaysia’s public universities; Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The QS.com Asian University Rankings emphasise on regionally significant measures of excellence, where quality as well as the high productivity of research distinguish top performing universities from their regional peers. These measures are indicated through academic peer review, industry/ recruiter review, papers per faculty, citations per paper among others.

“MMU is proud to be listed and recognised as one of the best universities in Asia by the international academic community after only 13 years of establishment," said the President of MMU, Prof. Dr. Zaharin Yusoff when commenting on this latest achievement.

"What puts this ranking into perspective is how we achieved this ranking with approximately a quarter of the expenditure of the five higher ranked universities and less than half the number of staff. Furthermore, MMU is completely financially independent and self-sustaining with zero subsidies, "

"Being in the top 200 Asian Universities Rankings’ list certainly marks a milestone as we establish our footprint in the education arena. We also view this role as part of TM Group’s corporate responsibilities towards realizing Government’s aspiration of producing knowledge workers.”

Prof. Dr. Zaharin also added that the university fully supported the Ministry of Higher Education in realising the national aspiration of having one or more of Malaysia’s universities in the top of the Times Higher Education ranking by 2010.

Currently, MMU offers courses in various fields including Engineering, Information Technology, Management, Law, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Finance, Bio-Medical Sciences and Creative Multimedia.
